JOB ADVERTISEMENT: Life After Coal Junior Coordinator

The Life After Coal campaign seeks to appoint a junior coordinator on a consultancy basis, working closely with the LAC Coordinator. The position is for a dynamic and passionate campaigner and organiser who would like to learn and grow as a coordinator within the Life After Coal campaign.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least 2 years of experience in organising, outreach, social justice advocacy, or related fields, including events management and planning experience;
  • An understanding of civil society or community organising
  • Relevant undergraduate qualification, or equivalent experience
  • Creative campaigning skills
  • Excellent coordination, collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Good writing skills;
  • Fluency in English and another South African language would be a strong advantage
  • Familiarity with social media platforms will be an advantage
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Drive will be an advantage
  • A sensitivity to inequality, social issues, and the needs of communities impacted by environmental degradation and injustice, and a passion for social and environmental justice
  • A commitment to diversity, inclusion, gender rights and transformation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Project coordination: Coordinating publication plans, service providers, LAC and community groups;
  • Logistics and event planning: Organising and planning meetings, workshops and events to support campaign objectives;
  • Supporting LAC communications: working closely with the LAC communications team to implement communications plans and update LAC social media;
  • General: Generally contributing to the reputation, institutional strength and resilience, strategic development, and wellbeing of the organisation;
  • Diversity, inclusion and transformation: LAC aims to build a diverse, inclusive and transformative culture, and we therefore expect all staff to participate in and work towards this goal.

REMUNERATION

The consultancy will be for 12 months, with the possibility of extending the consultancy beyond that period. Ideally the candidate will start on 1 October 2023, pending confirmation of funding. The total consultancy fee for the first 12 months is R328 500.

LOCATION

The work of the LAC campaign stretches across South Africa. We are open to applicants based in different parts 0f the country. The position will require some local travel. 

WORKING WITH THE LIFE AFTER COAL CAMPAIGN

The Life After Coal/Impilo Ngaphandle Kwamalahle campaign is a well-established joint campaign by Earthlife Africa, groundWork, and the Centre for Environmental Rights. We aim to discourage the development of new coal-fired power stations and mines; reduce emissions from existing coal infrastructure and encourage a coal phase-out; and enable a just transition to sustainable energy systems for the people.

The campaign seeks to appoint a junior coordinator on a consultancy basis, starting on 1 October 2023, pending confirmation of funding. The consultancy will be managed through the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER).

The position is for a dynamic and passionate campaigner and organiser who would like to learn and grow as a coordinator within the Life After Coal campaign. The junior coordinator will report to the Campaign Coordinator and the campaign management team, and will work closely with the Life After Coal team, which is a small team with members working on a consultancy basis. 

The Life After Coal campaign is committed to diversity, inclusion and transformation and strives to reflect South Africa’s racial, cultural, sex and gender diversity within its campaign staff. Candidates from historically disadvantaged or marginalised groups as well as community activists are strongly encouraged to apply for this post, and will be preferred.
