24 June 2016

The goal of the Draft strategy to address air pollution in dense low-income settlements (Published by the Minister of Environmental Affairs for comment on 24 June 2016) is to map out the path the country needs to take in reducing the impact of air pollution in dense low-income communities. It aims to provide a coordinated approach in implementation of efforts directed at ensuring the ambient air quality is in compliance with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (published in terms of the National Environmental Management; Air Quality Act, 2004), thereby ensuring the right to air that is not harmful to people’s health and well-being as required by section 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.

Comments on the draft strategy was submitted by the Centre for Environmental Rights on behalf of groundWork, Earthlife Africa Johannesburg, South Durban Community Environmental Alliance, Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance and the Highveld Environmental Justice Network on 29 August 2016.
