Life After Coal stands in solidarity with Abahlali baseMjondolo following the assassination of Zweli ‘Khabazela’ Mkhize

20 February 2026 at 4:59 pm

Life After Coal (LAC) stands in firm solidarity with Abahlali baseMjondolo (AbM) following the assassination of a leader of their eNkanini branch, Zweli ‘Khabazela’ Mkhize, last week on 12 February.

AbM is a movement that has survived more than two decades of political killings, forced evictions, intimidation and deep betrayal by the very institutions meant to protect them. Mkhize’s assassination marks the 26th assassination of an Abahlali member. He will be laid to rest tomorrow, 21 February.

Our deepest condolences go out to all Mkhize’s family and loved ones and all AbM members. We reaffirm our commitment to fight for safety for all Human Rights Defenders.

LAC stands with human rights defenders and with all organisations working tirelessly to build a just and inclusive society. An attack on one is an attack on all. We will not be silent in the face of injustice.
